Michael

NDIS-Informed Practitioner and Founder of Catalyst Counselling

Hi, I'm Michael Ellis, the founder of Catalyst Counselling, based in Broken Hill, NSW.

I provide counselling for adolescents, adults, private clients and NDIS participants. Face-to-face sessions are available in Broken Hill, and telehealth is available for suitable clients across regional and remote areas.

My approach is trauma-informed, person-centred and practical. I work with people who may be experiencing trauma, anxiety, stress, emotional distress, adjustment difficulties, relationship challenges, low confidence, or difficulty managing everyday life.

A Practical and Human Approach

I believe counselling should provide a safe space for people to feel heard, understood and supported, while equipping them with practical tools for change.

My work is grounded in respect, curiosity and collaboration. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, I aim to understand the whole person — their past experiences, current challenges, strengths, relationships, environment and ideal self.

Counselling at Catalyst Counselling is guided by a practical three-phase approach:

  1. Understanding the impact of past experiences and how they inform the present.
  2. Improving present-day functioning
  3. Building confidence and direction for the future

This structure helps counselling remain purposeful while still moving at the client’s pace.

Experience Across Counselling, Disability and Regional Services

My experience across counselling, community services, mental health, disability support, behaviour support and regional service systems.

Before becoming a counsellor, I served in the Australian Army. This experience shaped my understanding of discipline, stress, transitions, identity and the importance of practical support during difficult periods of life. This also helped develop a grounded and respectful approach to working with people who have experienced adversity, pressure or major life change.

My past has helped me understand the complexity that can sit around a person’s life, particularly when they are also navigating the NDIS, family stress, supports, disability-related barriers, trauma or limited access to services in regional and remote areas.

My experience allows me to work not only with the individual but also with the broader support context when appropriate. This may include communication with support coordinators, carers, families, plan managers or other professionals, where consent has been provided.

NDIS and Telehealth Counselling

Catalyst Counselling works with plan-managed and self-managed NDIS participants.

I understand the importance of counselling that is connected to the participant’s goals, capacity, daily functioning and support needs.

Telehealth counselling is also available for suitable clients who live outside Broken Hill or who may have difficulty accessing local services.

This can be particularly helpful for participants in regional and remote areas, including Broken Hill, Mildura/Sunraysia, regional NSW, regional SA and other locations where suitable.

Local Understanding, Broader Reach

I live and work in Broken Hill and understand the strengths and challenges of regional communities.

I recognise that people in regional and remote areas can face additional barriers when trying to access consistent counselling, mental health support and disability-related services.

Catalyst Counselling aims to provide a reliable, respectful and practical counselling option for people who may otherwise struggle to find suitable support.
